Schott Glass Used in Selected Models for Crown Element
Black Diamond ED100 SCHOTT benefit from the inclusion of Schott glass being used for the positive front Crown element in the objective. Schott is the recognized world leader in glass utilized for precision optical lens systems, including medical instrumentation, and famous-brand camera lenses. While Schott glass is only used in selected models, all other models utilize top-quality, Grade-A glass from perhaps less famous but, nonetheless, highly respected, high-quality glass manufacturers.

Observing with Black Diamond ED100 SCHOTT
Fortunate indeed is the amateur astronomer with a Black Diamond ED100mm refractor on a clear night with transparent skies and a stable atmosphere. Turning the telescope to the Crescent Moon, the Apennine Mountains snap into razor-sharp focus revealing a cornucopia of jagged mountain ridges, canyons, and numerous small craters in ultra high definition. Not far removed, reaching skyward, the crater wall of Archimedes pops into view in bold relief against the smooth flatlands that transverse the distance between it and the Apennine Mountains. This is lunar observing at its best – HD style. The gas giant Jupiter displays its swirling equatorial bands in high-definition with festoons, and tonality within the bands. The great spot is clearly visible, discreetly contrasted from the surrounding Jovian landscape. Prominent deep-space nebula yield improved definition in gaseous outer extensions. Stars in globular clusters resolve to pinpoints. This is just the beginning of an incredible journey of exploration possible with a Black Diamond ED100.

Metallic High-Transmission Lens Coatings
Each air-to-glass lens surface has exotic anti-reflection metallic coatings applied to ensure optimum light through-put of approaching 99.5%. The proprietary Sky-Watcher “Metallic High-Transmission Coatings” (MHC) are the finest photon anti-rejection coatings in their class.

Light-Baffled Optical Systems
The objective lens cell is light-baffled to reject stray, unfocused light. The draw tube is likewise baffled to insure optimum contrast. The tube interior is flat blackened to help prevent unfocused internal light reflections from reaching the focal plane.

Precision 2” Crayford Focuser is Standard
Optical focus is achieved by means of a mechanically ultra-smooth, backlash-free, precision 2” Crayford rack & pinion focuser-assembly. This focuser offers fine and ultra-fine focusing adjustments.

Tube Materials
The optical tube material is rolled steel, powder-coated reflective gloss black with gold fleck accent. The front and back cells are cast-aluminum painted white, or black.

Telescope Tube Attachment Hardware:
The optical tube comes with attachment hardware that allows it to be securely fastened to any Sky-Watcher mount. The quick-release tube rings provided with Black Diamond ED100 are cast-aluminum, painted white.

Included Components for Selected Models*
Black Diamond ED100 is supplied with backlash-free 2” Crayford focusers and quality foam-lined metal carrying cases as standard equipment. Black Diamond ED80 is also supplied with 8x50mm viewfinder with bracket; 2” diaelectric diagonal; two 1.25” LE (Long Eye Relief) eyepieces (LE20mm and LE5mm); 1.25” focuser adaptor; and tube ring attachment hardware for mounting to any Sky-Watcher, or other compatible mounts.

The additional aperture of this telescope provides a dramatic increase in resolution and a heighten sense of seeing lunar and planetary surface phenomenon in seemingly 3D-like high-definition.  Tight globular star clusters like M13 in Constellation Hercules appear like a beehive of crisp stellar pin points, star upon thousands of stars deep into the objects core.  In Deep-space, rich aggregates of stars within Galaxies, Nebulas, and open clusters appear brilliant contrasted against a very dark velvet black background.  The wispy, delicate, featherlike structure of dust lanes and extension of glowing gasses can be seen reaching out far beyond the object’s core.

The Equinox 120 is the star of the Equinox Series. Its generous aperture makes it an ideal observing instrument for solar system and deep space objects alike – and it really shines on double stars. For astrophotography, the Equinox 120 features an f/7.5 focal ratio – more than speedy enough for today’s sensitive CCDs and digital SLR cameras. Plus, it can be coupled with a common SCT focal reducer to achieve even faster speeds.
    Its high-power views are stunning.

  •

  • Consider these comments elicited by the Equinox 120 at a recent star party. Saturn was being viewed at 180x: “This is the view of Saturn that I have been waiting all my life to see” Brian, D., an amateur astronomer with 30 years of experience; “Come on, you’ve got a picture in there somewhere” Karen, P., first time ever looking in a telescope.
For experienced observers and novices alike, the Equinox 120 delivers remarkable and memorable views. It has the perfect configuration of aperture, focal length and focal ratio to make it a general-purpose telescope that can be used for everything from widefield viewing to high-power planetary imaging. It may be the only telescope you will ever need, and one of the finest you will ever look through in this aperture class.

    Standard Features:

    D = 120 mm,  F = 900, f/7.5.
Razor sharp, colour-free, high contrast optics.
    Retractable aluminum dewshield.

Skywatcher Pro-Series ED refractors are built with a two-element air-spaced objective. The second element is made of the highest grade ED fluorite glass called FPL-53. This premium glass choice is a basic warranty for virtually no false color and for high contrast. The high standard set in material choice is also set in production. No effort is spared to reach optimal optical quality: Our best opticians give each objective a hand pitch polishing finishing touch. This dedication to perfection together with aspheric shaping technology are the best ways to reach a very good wavefront (*) which means virtually no aberrations and textbook star images. The quality of each ED Pro Series objective is monitored by means of Ronchi (*) test and star (**) test.

(*) The essential function of a telescope is gathering starlight without "disturbing" it. This means changing the path of the lightwaves without altering the lightwave itself. Lightwaves all together are referred to as a wavefront. Alterations in this wavefront caused by the optics should be avoided. A wavefront analysis by Ronchi test will show an absence of wavefront alterations if the black and white lines (interference pattern) are perfectly straight and parallel.

(**) The star test proves the ability of the optics to reproduce a pinpoint light source (star) as a pinpoint image. Concentric light circles will surround the pinpoint light dot. These increasingly faint light circles are unavoidable due to diffraction but being well concentric around the central light dot they are a warranty for good optical alignment of the lenses.

Performance of the Sky-Watcher ED Pro-Series refractors surely will both delight and surprise the most critical observer.

Premium quality, high performance telescopes for planetary and deep-sky observations as well as astrophotography and CCD imaging. The two-element objective lens is fully multi-coated and utilises special, extra-low dispersion FPL-53 fluorite glass for the virtual elimination of false colour. Performance of these telescopes will both delight and surprise the most critical observer, and can be genuinely compared to Apochromatic telescopes of other brands in price brackets normally way beyond the reach of the average user.

ED Apochromatic Optics: ED Fluorite glass elements minimise chromatic aberration, provide higher resolution and superior contrast. Colour fringing around objects is virtually eliminated with this type of optics.
