Concept: I have built Newtonian reflectors since my high school days and still enjoy observing with my 12" f/5.3. Knowing how the Nagler eyepiece complemented fast Dobsonians and Newtonians by removing eyepiece induced astigmatism, I now became intolerant of the inherent defect of coma in a parabolic mirror. Paracorr - more stars, sharper stars, more time to observe. I decided to try to achieve the same field quality for parabolas as reached by my Nagler eyepiece and 4-element refractor designs. Existing coma correctors seemed to be limited in color correction, spherical aberration and convenience in use. Paracorr (parabola corrector) uses 2 multi-coated, high index doublets, is completely color-free, center and edge, and installs like a Barlow. Coma is corrected so well, the diffraction limited field area of an f/4.5 Dob/Newt is increased 36 times! - Al Nagler An optical chain is as good as its weakest link. With the development of 82 degree Nagler eyepieces, Tele Vue offers the largest, flattest and best corrected visual fields in the industry. Combine the Nagler revolution, Dobsonian revolution and Paracorr for the ideal mating for spectacular wide and sharp "spacewalk" observing.
Life before ParacorrComa makes stars look like blurry comets whose tails point out radially from the center of the field. The faster your scope's speed, the worse the effect. All parabolic mirrors used in Newtonian reflecting telescopes are limited in field sharpness due to coma. Even a perfectly made 13" f/4.5 parabola has only about 0.1 degree diffraction limited field. Previous attempts to correct for coma have been limited in usefulness. Some correctors were designed mainly for astrophotography. Dedicated coma correcting eyepieces were another approach. However, these were limited to 50 degree apparent fields and would orphan your existing eyepiece collection.
Life with ParacorrParacorr is a universal corrector that tightens and intensifies star images [see performance graphs here] on all f-ratios from f/3.5 to f/8 without adding any false color or spherical aberration! You no longer have to constantly shift a Dobsonian to keep objects centered for sharp viewing. Using a Tele Vue eyepiece, put M-13 at the edge of the field and enjoy resolving its beauty as it drifts across your view. Paracorr is recommended for use with all Tele Vue eyepieces because our Plössls, Radians, Panoptics, and Naglers achieve higher levels of aberration correction than competitive models. However, Paracorr is also compatible with other eyepiece makes.
Paracorr Eats ComaThe Paracorr can be used with both 2" and 1 1/4" eyepieces, as well as with your 35mm camera body. For visual use, slip Paracorr into your focuser like a Barlow lens, and your eyepiece into Paracorr. 1 1/4" eyepieces will make use of Paracorr's special low profile 1 1/4" reducing adapter. Paracorr is threaded for 2" filters. AstrophotographyMount your 35mm SLR to Paracorr, and the quality of full frame photos will be spectacular since star image sizes on film can be less than .001" over the full frame for an f/4.5 mirror. Edge-of-field sharpness is further enhanced since Paracorr also acts as a field-flattener. See our Strawberry Field fast Newtonian images. Try Paracorr on your "DobNewt." We think you'll agree that the revolution is complete. Important Note
Paracorr is designed to work properly only with parabolic mirrors in Newtonian or Dobsonian telescopes. The visual (PCV-2000) and photographic (PLA-2001) models are the same optically but the visual model has a larger output lens to prevent vignetting when using a 31mm Nagler Type-5. Both types require a 55mm ±4mm optimum back focus for CCD or film plane. The photo model has T-Ring threads so that a 35mm camera body with T-Rings is properly positioned. If a CCD is used, set path length from Paracorr flange surface to CCD surface to 55mm ±4mm for best results. The visual model can only be used with CCD nosepieces having 2" or 1¼" diameters, like eyepieces. You must adjust distance from last lens surface to CCD surface to 55mm ±4mm for best performance.
OPTIMIZING YOUR TELE VUE NAGLER TYPE 4 AND TYPE 5 EYEPIECES WHEN USING PARACORR'S TUNABLE TOPAs you've read, all Newtonian/Dobsonian telescopes can benefit from using a Tele Vue Paracorr (Parabola Corrector) to eliminate coma in the image. One aspect to optimizing this correction is the distance of the eyepieces focus point (field stop location) to the last surface of the Paracorr lens (within a small +/- tolerance of course). Typical eyepieces used with fast Newtonians can have field stop locations differing by as much as half an inch. To accommodate for the differences, we developed the "Tunable Top." The "Tunable Top" permits optimized aberration control for all Tele Vue eyepieces and many others, by simply loosening a screw and rotating the Tunable Top. The eyepiece barrel height raises and lowers, allowing you to maintain the proper field stop to Paracorr lens distance. For your reference, here is a recommendation guide for choosing the best setup for various Tele Vue eyepieces to get optimum correction:
CAUTION: Do NOT use Barlow lenses with the Tunable Top Paracorr; the Barlow may contact the Paracorr lens. User Reports
"Wow - On
our 30" f/4 and 17.5" f/4.5, using 10 different eyepieces, we noted
a 75% - 95% reduction in edge field coma. Paracorr is a must for
anyone who owns a fast ratio telescope and enjoys wide field, deep
sky viewing."
"l begun my
tests with the first quarter Moon and the 20-inch (f/3.9). Without a
coma corrector there was a slight smearing of lunar detail away from
the center of the field. It looked like the focus needed to be 'tweaked,'
but, of course, doing this did not improve the view. With the
Paracorr the entire disk of the Moon appeared in sharp relief."
"I met up
with Al Nagler who was showing off the new 31mm Type 5 Nagler and
the prototype adjustable Paracorr - good thing I had my credit card
with me... the views in the 31[mm]/Paracorr combo are absolutely
stunning. Stars in the Double Cluster are pinpoint to the edge. The
true field is almost a full degree. Eta Carina fills the eyepiece
with it's detailed nebulosity. The colors of the Orion Nebula are
vivid, the entire loop and M43 are easy in this richest field combo.
Andromeda's dark lanes sweep across the field of view and M32 floats
comfortably nearby. A simple twist on the adjustable Paracorr
optimizes it for my 9mm Type 1 Nagler, and moments later we're deep
into the Trapezium with countless tiny pinpoints stars embedded
throughout the central nebula. Uncle Al has outdone himself again (how
does he keep doing it?) . On the new 22 StarMaster, this is the
ultimate richest field eyepiece combo. For you Monty Python fans,
the Holy Hand Grenade is here at last - it's made by Tele Vue."

Concept: I originally designed the Tele Vue Barlow line to complement the high performance of our eyepieces. Only 2 elements of high index glass were required to reduce all aberrations to well below the airy disc in an f/4 system. It has taken a good 15 years, but I think we're finally laying to rest the popular myth of the "degrading Barlow." In a 1997 Sky & Telescope review, Terrence Dickenson wrote "...Technology has erased the old objections. A modern Barlow will not degrade your telescope's optics. Anyone telling you otherwise is using outdated information. Moreover, the highly regarded Nagler eyepieces and their clones have built-in Barlows - ample evidence that the lens is not some detrimental intruder." Thanx Terry, I couldn't agree more - Al Nagler
Properly designed Barlows do wonderful things: They amplify power, slow the telescope’s f/# (improving eyepiece sharpness), and give designers the opportunity to compensate for eyepiece aberrations. Tele Vue Barlows use multi-coated high index glasses for optimum aberration correction, exceptional contrast with virtually no light loss. Observed performance is aberration free, even when tested with f/4 scopes. They even improve our competitor’s eyepieces and telescopes! Tele Vue QualityCompromise image quality in any part of the optical chain and you've compromised every part! Tele Vue product design and execution deliver consummate satisfaction. Every Tele Vue Barlow must pass the same rigorous f/4, full field testing as all our eyepieces. All Tele Vue Barlows now use brass clamp rings for secure, non marring holding of eyepieces and accessories.
Offered in 2x and 3x magnifications, these 1¼" Barlows perform identically. Simply choose either or both based on your eyepiece collection. Features include parfocal-ization, 1¼" filter threads, captive lock screws that won't fall out and full multicoatings. 2" Big BarlowOffered in a 2x magnification, the Big Barlow is ideal for Newtonian scope owners. It will be parfocal with both 2" and 1¼" eyepieces in this application. Features include threads for 48mm filters, captive lock screw and full multi-coatings. Barlow Interface
You can double
the power of any eyepiece with the 2x Big Barlow, but adding
the interface lens brings the pupil back to original position when
used with long focal length eyepieces such as the Panoptic 41, 35,
or 27mm 2" models. The combination of interface and Big Barlow
mimics the Powermate concept. Note: The Big Barlow is not recommended for use with 2" diagonals because it's length prevents it from being parfocal. With some telescopes, focus might not be reached, particularly when the interface lens is also used with it. A far better approach with no potential problems in any scope or with any eyepieces is to use the 2" 2x Powermate (#PMT-2200), which essentially includes the interface function. See the write-up on Powermates for more details.

Powermate: focale extender |

Concept: While Barlows are powerful tools, the negative element defining them also limits their ability. The simple negative element Barlow increases eyepiece eye-relief. With short focal length eyepieces the effect is negligible. However, on long focal length eyepieces the exit pupil position moves well beyond the designer's intended position, resulting in vignetting with many eyepieces. This is why "Shorty" Barlows in particular, with their strong negative element often vignette and degrade long focus eyepieces. My 4-element form picks up where the Barlow concept can go no further. Powermate™ is a technically universal solution, using a positive field lens to redirect field rays. The result is an exit pupil that stays where the eyepiece designer intended. With freedom from aberrations, greater magnification potential, and compact size, I hope you'll agree Powermate™ raises the standard for image amplification. - Al Nagler 1¼" Powermates: 2.5x & 5xThese models stand less than 3" out of your focuser and the 5x takes 1¼" threaded filters. They are parfocal in ALL 1¼" diagonals and prisms. For this reason, they are highly recommended over standard Barlows for 1¼" diagonals and refractors such as the Tele Vue-60. The 5x Powermate™ is ideal for long focus CCD and film photography, magnifying about 7.7x. It’s an attractive, high performance alternative to eyepiece projection. The 5x is also perfect for slowing down your scope for Hydrogen-Alpha solar observing.
